I have decided to compile a list of my top ten releases this year, so if you have time to download and/or buy any of these - do so without hesitation today, they are all superb. 01. He Can Jog Middlemarch (Audiobulb) Erik Schoster has made one of the finest albums in recent years with this release. Its not just the sheer range, its the ebb and flow and the amazing way he keeps things together, at once making an album which covers hip-hop, electronica, ambient, noise, pop so on and so forth, without it ever sounding strained or overly detailed. Quite simply, a new pop masterpiece. Let me say that again...MASTERPIECE! 02. Starfucker Starfucker (Badman) Pop brilliance from Portland's finest. I got free tickets to a show in Tokyo and were told they were the 'next big thing' from friends from Portland. The show wasn't great but something in the melodies caught my attention and so I bought the CD, took it home and slowly increased the volume. Six hours later, at eight in the morning, I left my apartment and my landlord complained as I had it on all night on loop - I hadn't slept, but was going to work happy and safe in the knowledge I had listened to one of the most melodic pop records since the 80's faded away. 03. Library Tapes A Summer Beneath the Trees (Make Mine Music) Another one of those free Tokyo gigs just this year. A friend organised a few shows for him in Tokyo and recommended I came along. Glad I did as live the quietude and sheer simple beauty of his work left me with shivers running down my back. I went out and bought a bunch of his work - and was left remembering my post-university travels listening to Brian Eno and Harold Budd's 'The Pearl' / 'Plateaux of Mirror'. Its not the same kind of record as such, but the spirit and purity is in the same deply moving, almost otherwordly, vein and I adore it. Very much an album and artist for long winters indeed. 04. Color Cassette Small Town Smoker (Mobeer) Craig from Moteer/Mobeer very kindly always sends me the lush Mobeer releases (as I am on Mobeer). Apart from the beautiful design of the cd's, the artists on both Moteer and Mobeer are superb and cover a lot of ground within the ambient-acoustic field I suppose. I distinctly remember putting on Color Cassette's 'Small Town Smoker' album and feeling like it was like nothing I had ever heard before. Its almost a pop record, only done very subtley with amazing bursts of energy and speckles and spots of sound. Its the kind of record you find something new each time you listen to it and the fact they call this a kind of 'b-sides' album for there soon to be released full debut is quite scary. And then I look at the credits, and there I see the name of probably my favourite artist around at the moment, namely Jason Corder. This guy creates so much beautiful, breathtaking work its hard to keep up on just his 'Offthesky' releases - that he writes the Color Cassette work is quite a humbling experience for me as an artist, but as a listener there is little else to say except 'damn, that's beautiful'. I don't know what Jason has for breakfast but I sure want some. 05. Celer Nacreous Clouds (and/OAR) If I could be bothered with LastFM - you would see in 08 I listened to Jason (Corder) and Celer's work the most. That they have each released so much to such a high quality is impressive by itself. But when you put an album like Nacreous Clouds on the superb and/OAR label, I find myself at peace with the world and deep...deep...deep...inside. The album has 37 songs, yes...that's 37, and as far as 'ambient' (such an abused term these days) records goes, this is right up there with my old favourites, if not jumping to the head of the line! The strange thing is Celer are the only artists I can think of who, over a collection of many albums, I can honestly say I never tire of. They just keep making wonderful music which is both dreamy and fascinating at the same time. 06. Chihei Hatakeyama Dedication (Magic Book Records) One thing about living in Japan (as I do) is that you come across so many amazing artists who have almost no recognition outside the country. The reason for this is a simple problem: language. One of the problems with the music and art scenes here in Japan is that, for some odd reason, they only really accept the very few artists who become established outside Japan first as its a kind of confirmation of their validity. Chihei is the exact opposite to the rule. I first heard about his work through his Kranky release, as well as his Spekk release under the duo Opitope. We first met each other two years ago playing at BEAF in the States and I was really taken aback at the simplicity and touching soulfulness of his music. Dedication, released on the super Japanese label Magic Book Records, is a delicate work of genuine art by one of my favourite artists. Recognised by a handful of peers outside Japan, Chihei continues to quietly release and play shows here in Japan without too much attention. Maybe he likes it that way, which is a shame as his work needs to be heard by far more people. Whatever the case may be, I have seen him six times now and let myself go as he creates a world all of his own, a world he allows us to enter in, rest a while and dream. Magical indeed. 07. Nicolas Bernier Les Arbres (No Type) I first came across Nicolas's work at the superb German label 12rec. What first caught my attention (as is often the case) was the unique and visually arresting artwork by Urban9 (who I then asked to do the artwork for my own 12rec release!). The album, entitled 'Objet Abandonne En Mar', was made with the guitarist Simon Trottier in 2007, and was the first net release I heard (as a relative newbie) that not only hit the expected high standard of releases I expect if I am to listen to over again and again, but surpassed it, becoming one of my favourite releases of 2007. The thing about Nicolas's work is how unique it is, it really is like nothing else out there. He keeps detailed and very delicate micro-elements in control, making it sound flawlessly simple when in fact it is anything but. He uses grainy elements and distortion better than anyone else I have heard before, timing the movement changes to absolute perfection. Les Arbres is a fantastically developed work, with amazing string sections coming in with lightly moving beats and micro-rhythms on a bed of beautiful noise. Its impossible to define the work (both solo and collaborative) he does, but this only adds to the excitement of future releases. I am left with little doubt that Nicolas is fast developing into one of the most important producers/artists around today. 08. Jeremy Bible & Jason Henry Shpwrck (Experimedia) This unbelievably productive duo continue to grow and amaze me with their work. I had never heard any of their (solo or collaborative) works until Jeremy and I got in contact nearly a year ago now. In this time, I have become firm friends with Jeremy, and apart from being an amazing photographer, Jeremy also co-runs the rather excellent Experimedia label with Jason. Experimedia, apart from being a netlabel, are now focusing on releasing some excellent artists in their uniquely packaged CD series. This might sound like I am trying to promote friends as well as the label I am on, but the truth is Jeremy and Jason are my favourite artists of the past year and I feel honoured to be friends with them and on their label. Musically, the first work I heard was Jeremy's debut release, excellently titled 'I Am Very Uncomfortable Most Of The Time'. Its just another one of those releases which causes me to scratch my head and wonder how one person can imagine something so detailed and broad, crossing and breaking boundaries as if they never existed in the first place. However, the past year, as a unit, they have released some of the most jaw-dropping 'ambient' (that word again) work I have ever come across. The music they make is never small it seems, but always big and brave. I have chosen Shpwrck as my favourite of their albums for the simple reason that it goes to so many places and works on so many levels. At times very dark, moments of beautiful light simmer through, and the way they use multiple levels of frequency creates a broad and complete listening experience. Each track differs significantly in tone and feel, yet it moves with such a fluidity, by the time the album ends you feel exhausted on the journey they have taken you on. A very fine album and body of work indeed. 09. Miko Parade (Plop) OK, to be honest I met Rie (Miko) just yesterday at one of my shows after inviting her along. I heard her music a while ago through a Plop connection and was thoroughly enchanted by what I had heard. She very kindly gave me a copy of her debut album (just released) and its been on non-stop since. This might seems a bit hasty as this is a whole year's review and I have listened to the other releases a lot more. However, its just like listening to a Japanese female version of His Name Is Alive or The Beach Boys and you can't go wrong with that. Whilst it is not breaking ground as this style is very popular now (Panda Bear, Buffalo Daughter, Caribou, The Animal Collective etc.), it is head and shoulders above other (more famous) artists in that Miko's melodies seem more original, her instrumentation more pure and her musical spirit more soulful. There is a directness and invention I really admire, and it feels fresh and more fun than any record I have heard this year. Delightful. 10. Jeremy Bible & Jason Henry Ound (Abgurd) OK, so when I started out this list I said I wouldn't double up. But the simple truth is, I find JB & JH's work too compelling to ignore it from my list of 2008, so I am listing another. Ound is really very different from Shpwrck. There is less variation, less tonal changes and less instrumentation. In its place there is a more focused approach to the feel of the pieces for me, its less of a journey than Shpwrck but no worse for that at all. If anything, this is Jeremy and Jason making music at its most beautiful and I have to confess that Undta moved me to tears. Perhaps I can say nothing more as to how highly I rate this album as a stripped down to its core, pure and very moving experience. Scott Tuma Not For Nobody (CD on Digitalis) Finally, a new solo album. Wasn't so sure it would happen again and then he surprised everyone with this masterpiece of stretched-out, blurred American music. Very spiritual and heartbreakingly beautiful. Soundtrack for the stairway to Heaven. 02. Grouper Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill (LP on Type) Perfect mix of clarity and obscurity. I spent many hours this year submersed in this album. Heavy Water gets my vote for song of the year. 03. Aethenor Betimes Black Cloudmass (LP on VHF) The addition of the two drummers is a godsend. Reminds me of that great Organum track that AMM's Eddie Prevost adds drums to on the Sphyx album. Looking forward to more of this. 04. Xela In Bocca Al Lupo (LP on Type) Bleak, sparse and creepin' around in the dank, dark catacombs of the cathedral. Kinda makes me feel icky, I love it. 05. Thuja s/t (LP on Important) The mysteries of the deep woods, very Lynchian from one of the most imaginative collectives of our time. 06. Fire Room Broken Music (CD on Atavistic) Free Jazz meets Free Noise and neither genre drowns out the other. Ken Vandermark on reeds, Paul Nilssen-Love on drums and Lasse Marhaug on electronics. Vandermark cuts himself loose from his Ornette safety net. 07. Common Eider, King Eider Figs, Wasps, and Monotremes (CD on Root Strata) Rob Fisk's (Badgerlore, 7 Year Rabbit, ex-Deerhunter) new solo project. The sound of a frozen landscape; sometimes blissfully serene, sometimes a blustery ice storm. 08. The Blithe Sons The Great Orthochromatic Wheel (LP on Family Vineyard) The Blithe Sons most structured album yet. The influence of Donaldson's Ivytree project spills over into one side of the LP with gorgeous, loose ambient pop songs. The other side is like a rustic Morton Feldman. 09. Svarte Greiner Penpals Forever (Cassette on Digitalis) An outstanding grasp of a personal aesthetic. Not sure if his music is improvised or not. If so, he's got an incredible control over the end result, rather than just the process which makes a lot of improvised music seem cold. 10. Windy & Carl Songs for the Broken Hearted (LP on Kranky) Now that the avant-garde are making shoegaze albums it's nice that this duo made a comeback to show 'em how it's really done. It's all about emotion, heart before head. 11. The North Sea Gated Community (CD on Root Strata) Brad Rose puts away his banjo, picks up the electronics and reveals his dark side. I imagine the apocalypse happening only in Gated Communities. Other Mentions: Ulaan Kohl - Volumes 1 and 2, Valet - Naked Acid, Goldmund - The Malady of Elegance, William Parker - Double Sunrise Over Neptune, Sun Kil Moon - April, The Fun Years - Baby It's Cold Outside, Loren Chasse - The Footpath, Emeralds - Solar Bridge, Ilyas Ahmed - Vertigo of Dawn, John Davis - The Gold Hooped Nature, Koen Holtkamp - Field Rituals.
