01. Castanets In the Vines (Asthmatic Kitty Records)
Music from the bottom of a coal mine. Music from the sunniest day in Barcelona. “Blood in my mouth/sayin’ drive me south/south to stay.” Country music was my first love and this one’s my favorite record of the year. Thanks to various magical mysteries, it was waiting for me when I got back from a couple months on tour and I spent a week borrowing cars just so I could drive around Portland and listen to it over and over again.
02. Jana Hunter There’s No Home (Gnomongsong)
Jana’s songs feel like really expensive olive oil tastes. I missed her last show because I (almost) cut my finger off and I still feel like shit about it. I love every song I’ve ever heard of hers. There are a lot of people in this world I want to beat the shit out of. Not Jana. I bet she’d slay my enemies like a Viking.
03. Ohioan Being of the Good River (Native Kin)
Sounds like 300 people in one room playing 300 instruments and singing because it IS 300 people in one room playing 300 instruments and singing. Pure joy up against spooky death-folk. Noise, drones, country, horn sections, this is a really incredible record. I bet Neil Young would be jealous—I know I am.
04. Deer Tick War Elephant (Feow!)
Is John from Deer Tick one of the greatest songwriters alive? Pitchfork said no. I’m saying yes. (So are a lot of people I know.) John’s vibe is pure Van Morrison in prime “T.B. Sheets” mode. Last US tour we met up in Providence, Rhode Island and drank a toast to the V-Tech dead. I sort of cracked a joke because it was still too close to the bone. The blood was still fresh. Felt bad about that but John didn’t seem to notice. John is from Providence and so is H.P. Lovecraft. Is there a connection? Go to the Swan Point Cemetery (lot 5, group 281), dig up Lovecraft’s skull, fill it with red wine, drink the wine on a full moon, and you’ll have your answer by midnight.
05. Scout Niblett This Fool Can Die Now (Too Pure)
I read a review of this one that said they didn’t like the record because Scout looks like Billy Corgan. What? Scout doesn’t look anything like Billy Corgan and her record could snap the chicken neck of all of Billy Corgan’s stupid CDs. The first time I saw Scout play I felt like I was seeing something new and vital and full of promise. This record proves that she’s one of the best human beings making music—and it sure does sound human. Pure damaged fury and white-squall guitar howl. Werewolf music.

The majority of music i listen to did not come out this year. I mostly listen to songs, not whole albums... Songs by Ernie Graham, Allen Toussaint, Tom Newman, Terre and Maggie Roche, Slapp Happy and Skeeter Davis were on my stereo a bunch this year.
That said, leaving off reissues, boxed sets and tunes from the past, these records and broadcasts provided many moments of inspiration, helping stitch the patterns in the fabric of this year:
The Bees Octopus
Panda Bear Person Pitch

Brad Rose Top 10 for 2007, in no order.
Meg Baird Dear Companion (Drag City)
As pure and wholesome as a fresh blanket of snow, I've listened to this record more than anything else this year. Its magic is in its simplicity.
Blues Control s/t (Holy Mountain)
The elements of Blues Control shouldn't work together as well as they do. It's a testament to the talent of Russ Waterhouse and Lea Cho that they make it work so brilliantly. Blues Control teeter on the edge of chaos and we're all the better for it.
Islaja Ulual YYY (Fonal)
This is not your typical Finnish forested affair. Islaja's new record is darker and full of grime. On "Ulual YYY," she is an absolute goddess.
The Cherry Blossoms s/t (Black Velvet Fuckere, et al.)
It's been years in the making, but The Cherry Blossoms first official LP was worth the wait. Backwoods folk anthems for the new millenium.
Sapat Mortise & Tenon (Siltbreeze)
Siltbreeze's return in 2007 was a god-send, and this album is proof. Disjointed fuckere, held together with duct tape and spackle - this is one hell of a burner.
Panda Bear Person Pitch (Paw Tracks)
The new Animal Collective was totally mediocre, especially compared to "Person Pitch." Panda Bear channels the Beach Boys like no other, and this album is pure sunkissed brilliance.
Yellow Swans At All Ends (Load)
Yellow Swans third proper full-length is easily their best. The dichotomy of blown out noise and bits of melody are worked to perfection.
Fantastic Magic Witch Choir (Abandon Ship)
This cassette-only release completely enchanted me this year, and I find myself wearing out my copy of the tape. Weirdo folk melodies with hooks galore and bent to the sun. These guys are incredible.
Tenniscoats Totemo Aimasho (Room40)
Fractured pop perfection. I don't know if Tenniscoats could make a better album. Seriously.
Steve Gunn s/t (Onomato)
One of the most underrated guitarists around has to be GHQ's Steve Gunn. GHQ cranked out some killer jams in 2007, but none of them came close to the genius of Gunn's solo CDR on Onomato. Waves of 6-and-12-string guitar mixed with banjo and harmonium... that's a recipe for success.

TOAP Colective Vol. I

01. Meg Baird Dear Companion (Drag City)
One of my favorite female singer/songwriter recordings that I have ever heard in my life. A perfect selection of songs and moods. ‘The Riverhouse in Tinicum’, ‘The Waltze of the Tennis Players’, ‘Do What You Gotta Do’, ‘All I Ever Wanted’…Beautiful beyond words. Also great recording job by Greg Weeks.
02. Glenn Jones Against Which the Sea Continually Beats (Strange Attractors)
My favorite fingerstyle guitar record of 2007, and one of the best guitar records in the past 20 years. Gorgeous compositions and performance.
03. Eric Carbonara Exodus Bulldornadius (Locust Records)
Eric plays a flamenco guitar with passion, grace, and fire. This collection of songs is greatly inspired by the music of Andalusia, and one of the most beautiful guitar records I’ve ever heard.
04. James Blackshaw The Cloud of Unknowing (Tompkins Square)
In James Blackshaw’s hands the guitar becomes larger than life! A transcendent and Beautiful record!
05. Marissa Nadler Songs 111: Bird on the Water (Peace Frog)
Ethereal and Timeless music by one of America’s Best contemporary Female singer/songwriter/guitarist. My favorite tracks are ‘Dying Breed’, ‘Silvia’, ‘Diamond Heart’, and ‘Thinking of You’!
06. Micah Blue Smaldone Untitled Handmade 5 song Self-Release
Micah is one of the most gifted Male singer/songwriter/guitarist in America. The Untitled songs on this EP are rustic and beautiful! Micah’s best songs to date!
7. Jack Rose Jack Rose (Tequila Sunrise LP)
Powerful Blues and Folk slide and fingerstyle guitar by one of America’s finest contemporary guitarist!
8. Jose Gonzalez In our Nature (Imperial)
Sparse recording with vocals, nylon string guitar, and subtle percussion. Beautiful, minimalistic songs about the human condition. Favorite tracks ‘How Low’, ‘Cycling Trivialities’, and ‘The Nest’.
09. Iron and Wine Boy with a Coin (Subpop)
Carried Home and Boy with a Coin. Two of my favorite songs of the year! Sam Beam’s poetic lyrics are always very inspirational.
10. Devendra Banhart Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon
Devendra is always inspirational and his music is like Warm Sun!
11. Voice of the Seven Woods – Voice of the Seven Woods (Twisted Nerve Records)

01. Tiny Vipers' 'Hands Across the Void', seemingly out of nowhere, is a beautiful, exquisitely executed album of haunting, sublime minimalist songs. The song 'On This Side' is a tender, heartbreaking story, and the delivery is so honest, it was the sleeper of the summer.
02. Phosphorescent's 'Pride' has enough completely devestating, magical, wonderful songs on it to make it one of the year's best albums. Another almost-perfect album from Phosphorescent.
03. Magnolia Electric Co's 'Sojourner Box Set' has two classic albums in it, either of which could have been a contender for album of the year.
04. Cocorosie's 'the Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillbourne' is a major work for them. It makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. It's weird and crazy and amazing. genreless. 'Werewolf' is one of the best songs of the summer, too.
05. Adrian Orange and Her Band's self titled album is a huge leap forward for Adrian, and for indie rock in general. Embraces a new roots music for a new generation.
06. M.I.A.'s Kala. Everyone knows this rocks, right? It's hard to go wrong with the multi-national pastiche approach to this, weird beats, and rapping kids.

01. Tinariwen Aman Iman (World Village)
Hopefully it is not necessary to explain to you who Tinariwen are, because they are so wonderful I pray the whole world is already aware of their music. Just in case you don’t know their story, I will give a briefing, because their origins are so interesting, and important to the way I hear the music. Tinariwen (meaning “Empty Places,” maybe best band name ever) are an 11-piece band formed in 1982 in Moammar al-Qadhafi's camps of Tuareg rebels, in Mali. Technically they play songs in a traditional Tuareg style called Tishoumaren, which means the "music of the unemployed,” (which is a name that describes all the music I like pretty much) but legend has it they are first Tishoumaren band to play electric guitars… to me it feels more like they are the first people to play electric guitars… so rich is the fabric of song they weave…it is simultaneously familiar and inspirationally new! This album “Aman Iman” means “Water is Life” and I can’t think of a better way to describe the way the music touches me. I can feel the motion, and currents, and tides, and rhythms, and flow, of the rivers, and lakes, and oceans present in my own cells when I listen to this music. It embraces the density and mystery of the multi-rhythmic, poly-melodic African traditions. And in the same way the water moves, every loving gesture in the music, reflects complex perfection. The songs are mostly about independence from the Mali government, they are sung in French and Tamashek, two languages I can’t understand, but I understand the hopeful spirit, and the motions of freedom. Needless to say, sometimes my “life water” (tears) spill when I listen. What a fucking great record. You might like it; you should probably listen to it.
02. Chirgilchin Collectable (Pure Nature Music)
I don’t know much about overtone singing, or traditional music from the tiny country of Tuva… but I do know that “throat singing” has a tradition in healing shamanism all around the world, and that most Tuvan songs are either about girls or horses, which means they are basically about their hearts or their land, which seem like synonymous terms when it comes to Tuva. In any case, the songs recorded here by three master overtone singers/traditional instrumentalists (Aldar Tamdyn Igor Koshkendey, Aidysmaa Koshkendey, and Mongoun-Ool Ondar), are deeply deeply moving. At times their tunes are profoundly sad, then ridiculously silly, and then marvelously reverent. This type of singing will always amaze me, because it is so deeply connected to devotion in my mind, knowing that it takes a lifetime to master. It also amazes me because it is a reflection of the powerful histories and systems of thought from this very ancient part of our world. These singers prove the body is a powerful instrument, part of a magic lineage, and capable of mystic unveilings, at least it seems like that to me. What a fucking great record. You might like it; you should probably listen to it.
03. Mount Eerie Mount Eerie pts. 6 & 7 (P.W. Elverum and Sun ltd.)
Is it possible to make priceless objects and then sell them at affordable prices? Yes it is, Phil Elverum proved it this year with his extra-ordinary release of a heavy, hardcover, 60+ page, coffee-table art-photo-book/picture disc 10”. Can this be true? Do people do things so nice? OK, I will put the rhetorical question marks away, and just say, I like what Phil does a lot, (that might be a big “duh” for some of you) but consistently Phil is creating things that I love… weather it be a letter-pressed 7” about why you shouldn’t smoke cigarettes, or an epic concept album with a cover/poster the size of my car!... his music, and his presentation of his music, is always completely genuine, and generous. Nothing comes from halfway. With this book/record, Mount Eerie becomes something more fully fructified. The book comprises almost 100 photos (some of them centerfold out!) taken by Elverum all over the world… and the images seem like a perfect companion to the entire Mount Eerie catalog. These shapes, and light, decorate the back of my mind while I listen to this or any Phil Elverum record. The songs on this 10” are from an old growth forests, deep in the dusk light… lyrical abstractions, and hauntings of songs that point me back to the pages of the beautiful book. What a fucking great record. You might like it; you should probably listen to it (and look at it).
04. Daniel A.I.U. Higgs Atomic Yggdrasil Tarot (Thrill Jockey)
Daniel Arcus Incus Ululat Higgs is the pagan Santa Clause. He is a middle-aged man with a white beard and baldhead, kindly, chubby, with mystic tattoos on his hands. He brings gifts from the astral plane, from the pagan pages, from the inner universe, from the ancient shadows. I am going to write about his incredible release “Atomic Yggdrasil Tarot,” but first I must strongly recommend attending one of his performances, where you can expect to transcend time and space and maybe visit distant worlds… live music is my favorite music, and Dan Higgs breathes new life into live shows. “Atomic Yggdrasil Tarot” is a book and CD release of Higgs’s paintings, poetry, and instrumental songs, each working in conjunction to broaden my experience of the others. The poems are each strict anagrams. Religious, and spiritual words (like “heaven”) are broken into esoteric thoughts, each letter signifying an aspect of the word, each word signifying an aspect of the universe. The poems are a pure and potent form, each word is chosen with great care and speaks clearly, and simply of profound intention. Higgs’s paintings represent similar choices, pagan and Christian iconography blends with hypnotic choices in color and pattern. The paintings are beguiling and rich. Musically Higgs presents songs from acoustic guitar, banjo, toy piano, and mouth harp, each treated with the same high gain against your brain production. The way each sound blows-out completely serves to make each instrument an abstraction, and increases the effect of the organic darkness cultivated by the whole presentation of this record. It feels a bit goose-pimply in the shadows of these songs and poems and pictures, as Higgs points us towards the slightly darker self, the one that is a little harder to embrace. These are not floaty new-age songs that sing the praises of an easy moralistic path, or stoned out paradise… instead this is art that is both physical and meta-physical, earthly and grounded, but also pushing me deeply inward on myself where I experience fear and elation, and things much harder to describe. What a fucking great record. You might like it; you should probably listen to it (and read it, and look at it).
05. Little Wings Soft Power (RAD)
Kyle Field is one of the very few songwriters in the world that never fails me. He is a wordsmith of the highest order, “Sir Kyle of the Golden Ballpoint” I’ll call him, and he is constantly turning a phrase that turns my soul over. And more often than not, his beautiful words and fragile melodies leave me touched and jealous, the song ends and I’m asking myself “why didn’t I come up with that?” such are his sparkling and unpretentious words (examples: “I taste the taste I taste, until it’s tasted” or “I’m in love with everyone, and everything they’ve ever done.”) In addition to being the nurturing father of many of my favorite songs, and just being a really nice guy, Kyle Field is also always changing the sound around himself. “Soft Power,” the new LP on his own newborn imprint, presents a quiet and solemn Little Wings, with a feeling of focused maturity in continuity that is new and wonderful. Roomy piano, nylon guitar, and tiny percussion sounds, conspire to bring me into a really intimate song space. It is a day-dreamy, serenely lo-fi, and autumnal sound. Hard to say more, the songs are simple and striking, shiny and beautiful. What a fucking great record. You might like it; you should probably listen to it.
06. Dirty Projectors Rise Above (Dead Oceans)
This record amazes me! If you don’t already know the concept behind this album… its relationship to the Black Flag record of the same title, etcetera, please please please look it up, and read about it, because conceptually this record is as deep as the deepest ocean. But if we can manage to forget about all of the heady goodness for just a minute and discuss the way these tunes work for the greater good of my ears… Dave Longstreth’s melodies and arrangements blow the cobwebs out of my long-muzak-suffering-mind. Soukous influenced guitar melodies caress my soul, left-brain time signatures bleat and bray through the strings and sticks and singers, while Longstreth’s alpha and omega singing style simultaneously destroys and creates the very notion of “singing.” The lyrics are about 80% the same as the Black Flag album, but they’ve never sounded better to me, more honest and full of meaning. What a fucking great record. You might like it; you should probably listen to it.
07. Wildbirds and Peacedrums Heartcore (Found You Recordings)
Wildbirds and Peacedrums is Mariam Wallentin and Andreas Werliin… multi-talented? Yes… but mostly, mostly Mariam is a deeply expressive singer, and Andreas is a powerfully emotive drummer. The smoke from their smoldering souls is expelled through their gifted creative forms. Like the incense in a swinging lantern held by the priest walking down the isle on Christmas-Eve…their songs fill the holy moment. The essence of purity in creation is created when they SING and DRUM! They are married and beautiful, and their talents are married and beautiful… and when I listen to them, their songs marry me, and we have half-sound half-human babies of beauty inspired thoughts! What a fucking great record. You might like it; you should probably listen to it.
08. Andrew W. K. Close Calls with Brick Walls (Load Records)
Enigma is a pretty stupid word, not one I use often because it is used way too often by some… but it is a pretty OK way to describe Andrew W.K., because it is hard for me, or anyone to figure him out. Is he a brilliant PR man, a simplistic savant, a performance artist, or something else completely? The latter seems most likely. But really for me the vote was out on whether Andrew W.K. was a jerk or genius until I saw him perform a few years ago. I had heard the radio singles off “I Get Wet,” and so I thought “songs about partying, weird” but I still tagged along reluctantly with some friends to a live show in San Francisco, mostly because the cover of “I Get Wet” intrigued me, blood dripping down his face and what have you… My mind was fixed in a different way after that concert though… I have never seen a performer give so totally and completely of himself before, and with so much positivity! Relentless positivity! He literally sweats joy. Go see him live, it might change your life. “Close Calls with Brick Walls” refines some of the concepts and sonic intentions of the earlier W.K. albums. The production leans toward the best of the weird 80’s slickness, like “Hounds of Love” (by Kate Bush) or maybe the best of Peter Gabriel, except much more manic and explosive! W.K. layers and layers melodies pushing me to my sonic limits, sometimes I suffer from song exhaustion. But not everything that is good for you will be easy, and bombastic song-structure couldn’t be changed in even the slightest degree in my opinion, it is perfect. It still isn’t easy for me to understand W.K.’s intentions, but listening to the words and sounds on this record, I think maybe he wants to save the world, either by becoming king of us all, or maybe just making us smile, laugh, and ask “so what’s this guys story?” What a fucking great record. You might like it; you should probably listen to it.
09. Goodbye the Band Sky Tiger (Pop Oblivion Records)
This is a two song, 10 minute EP featuring a really good cover of the Ween song “Ocean Man,” and the best song every written by Goodbye the Band… “Sky Tiger.” This is one (rated number one by me) of over 900 songs by the abnormally prolific, home recording, all instrument playing, John Acquadro… he’s one of those golden boy’s of indie music who cause me to think: “so this is why the internet was invented, so people could make 900 crazy, and beautiful, and funny songs, and then have them available to everyone ever.” (Check him out on Archive.org it will make you happy) “Sky Tiger” is about new life, one life changing and a new one growing out of it, you know, it’s about a girl getting pregnant... but it’s also not about that, because the way Acquadro approaches any concept will always surprise me, everything makes sense, but nothing seems to relate. I am surprised by all parts of this music, instrumentation, lyrics, everything. It is hard to express how happy this song/EP makes me… but let me just say that I have enormous respect for any musician, writer, artist, etcetera, that can be funny and brave simultaneously. Goodbye the Band is steeped in irony and comedy, but Acquadro doesn’t use it as a shield, and it doesn’t prevent honest expression, instead it enhances the sincerity of the songs, and the project as a whole. What a fucking great record. You might like it; you should probably listen to it.

Asa Fire on the Mountain

Amy Winehouse Back to Black
Mark Ronson Version
Ver acima.
Bezegol Rude Bwoy Stand
Plant, Roots of Evil, Forever Love e que dizer daquela inesperada guitarra portuguesa no potentissimo Let Dem Know? Mô kota, fechaste tudo, tasco, restaurante, discoteca, todos mambos. Grande pedra.
Terrakota Oba Train
Sam The Kid Pratica(mente)
Alice Smith For Dreamers, Lovers and Me (2006)
Sara Tavares Balancé (2006)
Mayra Andrade Navega (2006)
Leonardo Wawuti Ltrospectivo (2006)
Keita Mayanda O Homem e o Artista (2006)
MCK Nutrição Espiritual (2006)
Halloween Mary Witch Project (2006)
Buika Mi Niña Lola (2006)
E para terminar, o abuso total,
Fat Freddy's Drop Based on a True Story (2005)
Jean Nipon
Actually nothing was crazy this year, but i discovered some hong kong and singapoure rock pop bands from the 60's. I was recently in tokyo and i thought it' must be fun to play some old tracks from the Asian area in this city so i searched and discovered a tons of pop and garage bands from the 60's based in Singapur, Hong Kong or even in Vietnam their names was Idaly Sisters, The Menace, Rita Chao, The Lotus or Naomi and the Boys, etc... Our period is full of cynism or depressing tunes. This era was great because so naïve but also very creative. They tried to copy The Beatles or The Birds but at the end the result was so so different and crazy. For me it the best in... 2007!

Men eater Hellstone
Pelican City Of Echoes
Sou fã desde o lançamento do "The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw".
Apostle of Hustle National Anthem of Nowhere
Explosions in the Sky All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone
Neurosis Given to the Rising
Luís Fernandes | The Astroboy / peixe : avião

01. Phosphorescent Pride
Beautiful reverb filled tragedies and beach boys esque harmonies. "A picture of our torn up praise" is one of my favorite songs I have heard in a while.
02. James Blackshaw Cloud of Unknowing
Gorgeous instrumental guitar record that transcends modern life.
03. Jesse Sykes and the Sweethereafter Like, Love, Lust, and the open halls of the soul
"The Air Is thin" is the most beautiful ballad. Sykes' voice is utterly amazing.
Other great discoveries of 2007 for me:
Mariee Sioux, Tegan and Sara.
Matt Bauer
Top 2007 not at all in this order:
01. Black Swans Change!
Well, Noel's fiddle playing just about makes me cry. And this latest record is just perfect to me. The songs, the arrangements, the production. just right and very moving.
02. El Capitan Stickeen
If you ever have a chance to put this in the car stereo while driving out of the Sierra Nevadas and straight into the late afternoon California sun, you should do that. I did and it was pretty much awesome. After listening to it a few times i started to develop a theory that it is a concept album about being happy. Which is kind of radical in a way. This is just my crackpot theory.
03. Parson Redheads King giraffe
They make you feel great. and if you feed them pancakes, they insist on doing the dishes. they are amazing!
04. Lewis and Vlarke Blasts of holy birth
When "before it breaks you" it starts up, it moves me so much for some reason, that i sometimes turn it off when it comes on because the feeling is a little too much. That sounds dramatic. But i'm just saying what comes to mind...
05. Alela Diane The pirate's gospel
This came out earlier in the u.s., but in europe in 2007. Solid start to finish. So strong and so beautiful all at once. It's one of those record that just doesn't get old, too.
06. Dame Satan / Two Sheds Split 7 inch
san francisco and sacramento unite for vinyl super group greatness! the definition of d.i.y. awesomeness. plus hand screened sleeves. nice job.
07. Mariee Sioux Faces in the rocks
One of my favorite voices ever. and lyrically, she has a totally unique viewpoint that takes you to all sorts to unexpected places. "Burried in teeth" is amazing that way.
08. Mingering Mike There's nothing wrong with you baby
Vanguard squad put out this recording that lay dormant and unreleased since 1969! the energy and imagination is undeniable. the back story is really interesting, but the music, on it's own merits, is very much worth seeking out.
09. Hula The cloud that eats hands
Iif "magic" did not make you think of goofy things like wizards and unicorns, magic would be the right word to describe hula. I've seen them a million times live and i'm completely sucked in every time.
10. Tom Brosseau Cavalier
I really love tom's songs. And being paired up with john parish's production is a great fit.
11. Peggy Honeywell Green Mountain
It's kind of absurd that somene who is such an amazing painter can also make music this good. that's her artwork on the albun cover and in the booklet inside. it's like she was given the talent or 3 or 4 people.

Clay Nightingale The River and Then The Restless Wind
I played with these guys in Austin, Texas last month. Watching them, I felt I had found the long lost brothers of our band. This album is so addictive, with the kind of lyrical perfection that makes you feel both like you’ve known them forever, and also like they know you better than you know yourself.
Au Revoir Simone The Bird Of Music
Perhaps I am a bit biased because we are friends, and we share a producer, but this record is a little piece of magic. There are layers and layers of intrigue here, you hear something new every time you listen. Wonderful for subway rides.
Led Zeppelin Mothership
We are about to go in to the studio to complete our record, and recording always makes me want to listen to good, loud, rock and roll. While I believe that people should really get all the albums and listen to them the way they were intended, this is a nice introduction to Led Zeppelin if you’re not already very familiar. Overwhelmingly good.
Tinariwen Aman Iman
Tinariwen are an amazing, genre-defying band from Mali. Tribal classic rock from the Sahara desert.
Midori Hirano
Cocorosie The Adventures Of Ghosthorse And Stillborn (Touch and Go)
They have been the one of my favorite artists in these years since they released their first album. Their last two albums are better than this newest one for me though, but still great to listen to Cocorosie's new "kind of hip-hop" style of music on this.
Tenniscoats Tan-Tan Therapy (Hapna/Headz)
I love Track 1 and 2 on this record. Or I can be satisfy only with these 2 songs which sometimes make me want to cry.
kashiwa daisuke Program Music I (noble)
I can feel like traveling in an imaginary story when I listen to these tracks on it. And his music has a great edge. So uplifting record.
Gutevolk Tiny people singing over the rainbow (noble)
It's easy to go into Gutevolk's world everytime I hear her music. That feels like daydreaming. I love it.
RF & Lili De La Mora Eleven Continents (Rowing at Sea)
Sweetest songs ever.
Small Sails Similar Anniversaries (Other Electricities)
So dreamy. Their performance in Japan I saw was great as well.
Max Richter Songs From Before (130701)
I know this CD is not released in 2007, but I've listened to it many times this year... His music has an invariant beauty what I've been influenced.
Kammerflimmer Kollektief Jinx (Staubgold)
It's so dark and complicated, but also it is like nothing else. I respect it.
Haco RISKA (Disk Union)
I really like her sense of song-writing with experimental sounds.
This record is a great collaboration of both along with her impressive vocal. That is so uplifting for me.
Savath & Savalas Golden Pollen (ANTI)
Since I am a big fan of Prefuse 73, I can't avoid to hear his another project. But this album is far more impressive than Prefuse 73's new record. I really can feel vital warmth with this music.

Tenho andado a ouvir novamente o Sgt.

Lee Rockey Lee Rockey Music LP
Portland has long been a destination for freaks and weirdos and this little slab is proof positive that this shit has been going on... well... at least since the '60s... huh... well... Lee really inspired Smegma pretty early on in the whole Smeg-sceme of things so.. in a roundabout way, Lee inspired most of the weirdo shit going on here for the last 40+ years via tweaked electronics and ultra tweeked instrument wrangling. too bad nobody knew it until he had passed on... hopefully the power of the pieces on this rec will translate into more archival digging... it's much deserved and highly relevant to what's going on RIGHT NOW in music.
Neil Young Live At Massey Hall CD/DVD
I had heard a lot about this recording before I had ever heard it.. and to have it in proper form is even better... while this shit was recorded in 1971, it transcends time and it's BRUTALLY HEAVY emotional weight pinpoints this guy right around "tonight's the night" while remaining somewhat less drowned in despair.. The songs are catchy as ever, but minus the band, the true depth of his songs shine through..
Pink Reason LP and 7"s
I've been hung up on morose New Zealand rock for forever... two of my favorites are Roy Montgomery and anything involving Michael Morley.. in some ways, I see this project as a melding of the two but he's from Green Bay, WI... really deep, moving songs that are punk in origin, but way too bummed out to approach a Ramones BPM. My girlfriend was converted by a track that she thought the dude was crying when he recorded the track.. AND the one time I've seen the guy play, he had a "Will trade merch for drugs" sign. LEGIT.
WOLD Screech Owl CD
I have to admit that I liked their debut, "L.O.T.M.P." better, "Screech Owl" is much more horrendous and unyielding than it's predecessor.. it's a bit less weird, a bit less melodic, but that's all made up for in total lowest-fi terror... this is really what I wish black metal always sounded like.. Supremely confusing... terrible violence. The record touches on being a Black Metal/Power Electronics hybrid without falling into the predictable trappings of either genre.. a totally imperssive and baffling listen..
The Field From Here We Go Sublime CD
This feels like the crescendo of a techno track skipping... it's so intense and relentless, but there's so much interesting movement going on throughout the CD... the feel is very organic and driving.. and remains both very minimal and entirely danceable. I've probably listened to this CD more than anything else in the last few months..
No Age Weirdo Rippers/EPs
Probably the most "pitchfork" of my picks.. but.. These guys have been buddies since the first Wives tour in.. 2003? It's been great seeing them in such a zone.. Making great records, touring forever and putting on great live shows and getting recognized for it all.. The only problem with Weirdo Rippers is that they left off a lot of worthy tracks from their EPs.. a lot of which were more zoned out and beautiful... too bad... I kinda wish there was another LP of more mellow stuff.. I'm in the mood for ballads..
Chromatics Night Drive CD
The dudes churned out a totally EPIC chill-out disco album.. the whole thing reeks of Night Rider and Moroder and the whole album is at 107 BPM.. I've known Johnny since we played music together in a pre-millenial rock band.. and Adam since he was a teenage Seattleite.. This record not only fulfills a promise both of these dudes have shown for all this time, but it really raises the bar.. the songwriting is great, the production is spartan and the vibe is impeccable. The Kate Bush cover is the icing on the cake.
Grouper/Inca Ore Cassette
OK.OK... yeah... Gotta rep the old buddies.. and this severely limited cassette has been on constant rotation when Liz isn't at home.. The Inca Ore end of things is her most faded/hazed side ever.. it's just completely blown and obtuse.. it's an exciting new direction that's as much tender and elegant as it is confusing and confronting.. it's pure obfuscation... The Grouper end is all elongated torch songs that portray a different side of her songwriting style.. and is a return the piano that she used for her debut album.. Top track is "Poison Tree." I could really have the "Tried" 7" or "Cover the Windows" on here too, but.. I'm jamming the tape.
Pulse Emitter Meditative Music CD-R
Another Portland dude makes good. "Meditative Music" was a track Daryl put together for his massage therapist girlfriend to use.. so.. He turned the white noise generator knob down on his generally fairly noisy modular synth and produced one of the most relaxing listens I've ever heard.. the whole hour-long piece is totally glacial and beautiful... the recurring melodic themes here are totally blissed out... The whole album represents what I find to be appealing about new age music without the severly off-putting spiritual side... And it showcases the breadth of Daryl's compositional ability..
Glass Organ Our CD/Justin Meyer - The Sound Of A Cassette Dissasembling Itself cassette
I think every Top 10 I've done has included something Justin's worked on.. be it Devillock, Tone Filth or anything.. I really love the dude's work and I think that "Our" is one of the best releases he's been involved with.. Glass Organ is a duo featuring Justin doing processing using various tape machines and electronics and Tom Helgerstrom playing guitar. All of their discs have featured a really beautiful level of decay and epic guitar/loop themes.. on "Our," the themes are even more beautiful and the sound is more lush and composed.. it almost sounds like "Loveless," minus all the pop songs and rhythm sections and then hand chiseled into epic 11:11 chunks of living space... I honestly think Justin's work under his own name is more successful than any of his other projects.. and while, this cassette is solely a conceptual piece lasting 20 minutes, the sound of the loop and the progression of the piece is beyond satisfying and remains consistant with his other work.
Eat Skull cassette
Old Skool dudes in Portland go new... Ex-Hospitals... dude from Exiled Records.. one of the best record stores in town.. their 7" was excellent lo-fi pop garage.. but.. this guy is way more down tempo.. sounds like acoustic guitars or some shit.. they're best when they're hitting mid tempos or are just brutally drunk basement slop.. I hope they keep the mange knob turned down for a bit.. The songs are too good to fry to hell.

I really liked:
1990's See you at the lights 7" (Rough Trade)
Amazing pop songs with heart breaking lyrics!
Abe Vigoda Animal Ghosts/All night and day 7" (PPM)
The best tropical punk band to sizzle anyones heart into a frenzy
I'm a fucking Gymnist So freakn' Juicy 7" (Ol' factory Records)
You most deffinately get anymore juicy than this! Rad punk dancey spazzistic romp stomp!
Devon Williams A Truce/ Elevator 7" (LA Records)
Again this man breaks my heart and lifts it up over and over. Could being in love be any better than this?
Lucky Dragons/Yatch Nirvana Sample 12" (white label)
Its about time someone put together the posthumas noise record that already exisisted in all of the beginings and triumphant endings of all those great Cheep Trick and Journey rip offs!
Ricard Izquierdo | The Telepathic Boy
01. Animal Collective Strawberry jam
02. The National Boxer
03. Menomena Friend and Foe
05. Tunng Good arrows
07. Rufus Wainwright Release the stars
10. Beirut The Flying Club Cup
11. Maps We can create
Sobrecogedor.

10. Mosaique Distant tales and retained memory

I realize i didn't listen to that much new music this year, most of my investigations took me much deeper into the past.
01. Boredoms Super Roots 9 (Commmons)
This live recording made at a Tokyo concert in 2004 far surpassed my expectations and instantly became amongst my favorite Boredoms recordings ever. The band is playing so tight it makes bands here sound like they never practice and the live choir is woven into the mix like a infinite resolution digital synthesizer.
02. Panda Bear Person Pitch (Paw Tracks)
I really need to hear more new Portuguese music because as far as I know this incredible creation by Noah Lennox is the best recording made in Lisbon released this year. The lyrics are like a sacred musical text that'll be passed down for generations.
03. M.I.A. Kala (XL)
All the songs on this album are really tracks, even though songs and tracks are like the same thing, there's this immediate energy captured on tracks that makes listening to the recording seem timeless in the same way that just thinking about the other kind of song can.
04. Pantha Du Prince This Bliss (Dial)
I feel like Strawberry Jams by Animal Collective is an exceptional album for any year but I want to mention Pantha Du Prince because of the incredible remix he did of Peacebone. This Bliss is a great album because he takes a lot of chances to expand the delicate worlds he creates with his songs to their limit.
05. Cluster Sowiesoso (Captian Trip)
Although it was recorded in 1976 this Japanese reissue of Sowiesoso helped me better understand new music when i heard it earlier this year. This Cluster album doesn't need to be as epic as their earlier work because they master texture and melody in such a way that's also very blissful.

Favorite music of 2007:
01. Agincourt Fly Away
English soft pop from 1970. reissued a couple of years back. Ear worms to tease away the day on a soft, green lawn.
02. Catherine Ribeiro + Alps Paix
Bart De Pape from Sloow Tapes first mentioned Ribeiro to me. Of course I then start seeing her records everywhere. Heavy, and heavy female vibe.
03. Michael Yonkers Grimwood
2007 reissue on DeStijl from 1969. Taps deep into the singularity that is the American underground.
04. Tudor Lodge Tudor Lodge
It took me a little while to dive into the ocean while my friends played in the waves and laughed at me.
05. Aswara S/T
Easternish, spectral improvisations from a cdr of a live recording from late 2006.
06. Harmonia S/T
Vinyl reissue originally out in 1974. Going up into the electronic head.
07. Blues Control Either of the two releases - The S/T on
Holy Mountain, or Puff on Woodsist. Relentless on it's own chugging.
08. Mouthus Saw a Halo
Yea, I worked on this record. Blinded by the snowstorm, I lay down and accepted the warmth of the pounding.
09. Stellar Om Source Ocean Woman
I saw a few of Christlelle's gigs when she came to NYC on loan from the Netherland's Hellbaard. Her gig at the Cakeshop (with Nate from Mouthus) was one
of my favorite from 2007. Something like Terry Riley on five - ten cups of coffee. With a direct line flowing through from start to finish. Rumour has an lp in the works.
10. Ash Ra Tempel S/T
Sometimes it's the only thing to take you away.
Sara Serpa
